: SOMETHING
FOR YOU MS Word USERS
I think I've sent this out before, but I find the Macro so useful that I
thought I'd send it out again in case
some of you missed it the first time around. MACRO DELETES CURRENT DOCUMENT
This Macro is designed to delete the currently opened document (file), in MS
Word.
Without this Macro you must perform five operations to delete a document.
These five operations are shown below. With the
Macro you may do it with only two key strokes.
1. Close MS Word
2. Go to Windows Explorer
3. Locate the document (file) you wish to delete
4. Highlight the file
5. Now you may delete the file.
This Macro is especially useful if you often need to open documents in MS
Word, as you work. When you no longer need the
document (you've already done a cut and paste or whatever) all you have to do
is click the Delete button, in the MS Word
toolbar, and the document is deleted. To place this Macro in the toolbar
follow the instructions
below.
The first step is to enter the Macro. To do this Press Alt-F8,
Then type the word Delete as the name of the new Macro and click Create.
Now, type (or you may use “Copy & Paste”) the Macro as shown below in the
drop down screen:
‘Sub Delete()
'Dim DeleteFile As String
DeleteFile = ActiveDocument.FullName
DoWhat = MsgBox("Do you really want to delete" + DeleteFile +
"?", vbYesNo + vbCritical + vbDefaultButton2, "Delete this file")
If DoWhat = vbYes Then DoWhat = MsgBox("Are absolutely sure you want to
delete" +
DeleteFile + "?", vbYesNo + vbCritical + vbDefaultButton2,
"Delete this file") End If
If DoWhat = vbYes Then
ActiveDocument.Close
End If
Kill DeleteFile ' Now delete the file
Click on File, Save Normal to save your Delete Macro. Press Alt-Q to get back
to MS Word screen.
Now, to get that Delete button onto the MS Word’s toolbar.
Click on View, Toolbars, Customize. When the Customize dialog box opens,
click the Commands tab. Scroll down through the
Categories list and select Macros. Your new Macro should appear in the right
pane of the Customize dialog box. Use the
mouse to drag it to the toolbar. Release the mouse button when you've located
a spot for the Delete button.
Click Modify Selection and name your new button Delete. Press Enter and then
click Close, to close the dialog box and save
your changes.
Now to see how your new Macro works.
Bring up a document that you wish to delete. click Delete. The dialog box
will open, asking if you want to delete this
document (file). Click Yes to delete the document.
The Macro will now give you another chance with a second dialog box. To
delete your new current document, click Yes
again. The document is deleted.
Note that this Macro can quite easily delete a document you need. Before you
click that Yes button, make sure the current
document is the one you really want to delete.

IPOD REPLACMENT
It's important that you know that if you send your iPod into Apple for a battery
replacement, you won't get the same iPod back. Apple will replace the iPod
with either a new, used or refurbished unit. This also applies to any type of
service are replaced. Also Apple won't transfer music or data from the old
iPod one. So it's important for you to back up your iPod data before sending
it in. In fact, Apple requests that you remove all data from it.

STOPPING YOUR PRINTER WHILE PRINTING
- Sometimes when you're in the middle of printing out an email or a manual and you wish to
stop printing, for some reason, and you can't think of anything to do, but take the paper
out of the printer's tray to stop the printer. Really not a good solution.
- Well, sometimes you just have to do whatever works, right? Most likely, though, the
removal of the paper from the printer's tray would leave the print job in queue, and would pick
up an start printing when you re-enable the printer. There is a better way.
- Most of us have at one time or another have started to print a large document, and then
later wanted to stop the printing. Well, on such occasions, you want to go to the printer's
properties and cancel the printing job.
- To cancel the printing job in Windows XP, click on Start >Printers and Faxes.
- On earlier Windows systems, click on Start > Settings > Printers. Double-click your
on printer.
- In the window that opens, click on Printer > Cancel All Documents, or similar statement.
Then be patient. It takes awhile to kill the printing process.
- NOTE:You can reduce your effort by creating a shortcut on your Desktop to your
printer. As before, open your Printers and Faxes window. Right-click on your
printer and click Create Shortcut. Put the shortcut on your Desktop.
- You can now get into your printer's window, by double-clicking the icon on the Desktop.
For even faster access, put the shortcut icon into your Quick Launch bar, which is the
area just to the right of Start, in the lower left corner of your monitor.
- To put the icon in the Quick Launch bar. On the Desktop, left click on the printer's
icon and hold down the mouse button and drag the icon to where you want it in the
Quick Launch bar, release the mouse button. Test the icon in the Quick Launch bar
to make sure it works.
- .You may now go back to the printer's icon on the Desktop and right click on the icon and click on Delete.
FINDING THE ACTUAL EMAIL SENDER'S ADDRESS
WHEN A FAKE EMAIL ADDRESS IS USED
If a fake email address is setup or received. Can it be tracked back to the real sender?
You might think that if you use fictitious information when setting up an email account, no one would be able to figure out the
email came from you. After all, you set up a phony Web address. Think again. Email contains invisible information about
the sender. The information about the actual sender is in the header. All major email programs can display header information.
Here's how:
- In Eudora, double click the message. Then click the Blah Blah button.
- In Microsoft Outlook, double click the email. Then click View>>Options.
- In Microsoft Outlook Express, click the email. Then click File>>Properties and select the Details tab.
- In Netscape, click the message to open it. Then click View>>Message Source to display the header.
LI>The sender's revealing information is in the sections that begin with "Received:." There may be several of these, depending
on the number of computers the email traversed. The originating computer is in the bottom Received:.
- That Received: section will have an Internet Protocol (IP) number, such as 124.213.45.11. It can be traced on a number of
Web sites. One Web site is Arin.net. The number is probably assigned to the sender's Internet service provider, rather than
the sender. But the ISP will be able to identify the sender using that number.
- The ISP probably will not give another person your name. It probably will let you know that someone is complaining, if that
is the case. If the case is serious enough, the ISP may cancel your account. The complaining party would probably need
a subpoena to get your name from the ISP. If that person is suing you, he or she probably could get a subpoena.
It is difficult to remain anonymous when you use the Internet. Obviously, some spammers do it. But you really need to know
what you're doing. I suggest you follow the general rule: "If it could come back to bite you, don't put it in writing! Email never
goes away!"
LI>If you receive spam email that offends you and you think it should be reported to someone. You should report it to
spam@uce.gov. When you forward this spam, be sure to include the full e-mail header information.
- A handy URLIf you ever have a hard time removing a program or file from your hard
drive, because it's in use or some other reason, take a look at the
following URL:

- ANTI - VIRUS PROGRAMS
If you're concerned about your anti-virus software missing the problem,
try an online scan, which are free. Here are addresses for two:

For freestanding computers, I recommend a software firewall.
Windows XP has one, but it is inadequate. Instead, download ZoneAlarm
(http://www.zonelabs.com), which is free.
- INTERNET EXPLORER CAN FILL IN THE BLANKS :
Internet Explorer can fill in the blanks for you when you're
using Web forms.; For instance, it can remember your password. Put in your user
name, and the password is added automatically.
This function is known as AutoComplete. To find it, open
Internet Explorer.
Click Tools>>Internet Options. Select the Content tab and click AutoComplete.
You can set up AutoComplete to remember Web addresses,
form information and user names and passwords. For instance, if you have
entered your address previously, AutoComplete will remember it. In the future,
when you enter the first number, AutoComplete will offer the full address.
You can call up everything available for a particular
form. For instance, go to a search site and double-click the blank. A
selection of search terms will be offered. You can choose one, or you can
delete some. Highlight the term by putting the cursor on it. Then click
Delete.
Unfortunately, that will not work with Web addresses.
The places you visit will be stored in the address bar in Internet Explorer.
You cannot delete them individually. You must delete them all. Click
Tools>>Internet Options, select General and click Clear History.
- Transparent ICONs
It's possible to make the ICONs on your DeskTop transparent. You can also change the
color of the text and many other things.

- Adding a web page to your Desktop
Instead of adding a Web page to the Internet Explorer Favorites folder,
you can create a shortcut to the Web on your computer's desktop. That
way, you can open the Web page (and launch Internet Explorer at the same
time, if it's not already open) simply by clicking the shortcut icon. To
place a shortcut to a Web page on your desktop, follow these steps:
In the Internet Explorer 6 browser, open the Web page to which you want
to create a shortcut. Choose File, Send, Shortcut to Desktop. Internet
Explorer creates a shortcut to the current Web page, with the title of
the page beneath a Web icon.
WHAT'S MORE IRRITATING THAN A SCRIPT ERROR MESSAGE?
Peop1e who use Internet
Explorer can get an aggravating message about script errors. On some sites, this can pop up
repeatedly. The message is caused by problems with the Web sites code, usually JavaScript or
BScript. Assuming you don't want to rewrite the bad code, you can turn off the message. Click
TooIs>Internet Options. Select the Advanced tab. Check the box next to "Disable script
debugging." Clear the box next to "Display a notification about every script error."
BULLETS ARE HANDY BUT OFTEN HARD TO CONTROL
When you need to put bulleted items into Word, you'll find the bullets on the Formatting toolbar.
If that isn't visible, right-click in the toolbar area and select Formatting. The bullets can be
irritating, though, because when you finish with them, they want to keep going. But they're easy
to stop. When you hit Enter to start a new paragraph, press shift.>p>
SCANDISK IS USUALLY NICE, BUT...
If you're using Windows 98 or ME, you know this drill Your computer crashes, and you're
forced to reboot. But when the computer reboots, ScanDisk starts. You can stop it manually,
but it's still a pain. You can stop this behavior. Click Start>Run. Enter "msconfig" (without
the quotation marks) in the box and click OK.. On the General tab, click Advanced. Put a
check mark in the box next to "Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown." Click OK>O K.
WINDOWS HAS HELP FOR THOSE WITH LOW VISION
Last week I addressed a listener's question about software for peop1e with vision problems.
I mentioned two programs, MAGic and JAWS, from Freedom Scientific. Windows also has
utilities that can help. Magnifier, which is present in all versions since Windows 98, enlarges
type. Narrator, present in XP and 2000, reads what is on the screen. Microsoft warns that
